Quick Overview

Made in Danner’s Portland, Ore. factory, the Mountain Pass combines the classic aesthetic of our signature hiker, the Mountain Light, with a modern, lightweight construction.
Details

Lightweight. Versatile. Classic.

Made in our Portland, Oregon, factory, the Mountain Pass was created to be a lighter weight and more versatile hiking boot that still reflects our classic Danner styling. Built with light hikes and city streets in mind, the overall design is inspired by our original Mountain Light with an updated construction method that integrates the shank, midsole and lasting board into a single piece. This new, unified platform, combined with a low profile Vibram outsole, allowed us to significantly reduce weight and create an out-of-the-box comfort that doesn't come standard with most classic hiking boots.

Full-Grain Leather Upper
To ensure its quality, we put our leather through six different tests before making our selection. Our full-grain leathers are the strongest and most durable form of leather.
Horween Leather
A naturally treated leather providing a slightly unique aesthetic for each hide, which may result in some variation amongst pairs of boots. On any boot that uses Horween Chromexcel leathers, you may see a slight amount of blooming, which is a natural characteristic of that type of leather.
GORE-TEX® (GTX)
100% waterproof and breathable, GORE-TEX® liners ensure that no water gets in, while allowing sweat and moisture to get out.
Leather-Lined Collar
Provides extra padding at the ankle for an easier break-in period.
Removable OrthoLite Footbed
Three layers of varying density are combined for maximum cushioning and support. The entire footbed is made of open-cell polyurethane for better heat dissipation and air circulation.
Bi-Fit Board
By combining the shank, lasting board, and midsole into a single unified piece, we were able to reduce a significant amount of weight from the boot without sacrificing support.
Vibram® Kletterlift Thin Outsole
Specifically designed for comfort and durability for everyday use, while reducing height and weight from the traditional Kletterlift outsole.
Stitchdown Construction
Handcrafted to provide a wider platform, our legendary stitchdown construction offers increased stability underfoot. Many of our stitchdown boots can be recrafted.
How It Fits
Portland made 503 last has a casual fit without compromising Danner's comfortable lace-to-toe construction. Fits true to size.
Recraftable
Extend the life of your boot with our recrafting services. Please note we are unable to replace the liner on this style due to the more technical construction of our lightweight Bi-Fit board. This boot is eligible for a boot stretch, basic and resole packages. See our Recrafting page.

I acquired the Danner Mountain Light II in brown one year prior. I am happy with the bullet proof construction and its good looks. The break in period is still on going one year later after using it for every bad weather day in NYC. They are not that uncomfortable with daily walking, but are very stiff and heavy and made to last through anything for decades. I would not take them on any type of long hike even after one year later for fear of blisters, but they work well for my uses in an urban environment during the winter. So, I decided to get the Danner Mountain Pass in Black Glace because I love the way Danners look, and I wanted a boot in black. I am so happy with this pair right out of the box. They are lighter, and much more comfortable from the get-go. The break in period has been much shorter and the way the tongue is constructed and the achilles support is contoured makes this boot much more comfortable. This is a much more forgiving boot with out the year+ break in period. The sole is thinner and the leather is thinner, and the upper is not one piece, and as a result, the boot is much easier on the foot. The I wish I had bought this boot in brown as well. My only gripes are that the boot fits tighter than I expected and the laces are too short for the boot. Also, Danner says that they come with two sets of laces, but I only received one black pair. I took out the in-soles that come with the boot and put in the airthotic inserts that the website sells and now the boots fit like a dream.

I wanted to use this boot for snowy days during work and personal use. I tried on the boot and it immediately felt uncomfortable on toes. For several days I would wear the boots just inside my house hoping it would loosen up, but it did not.
This boot is an EE width but feels like a narrow regular D width. I have another pair of Danners I purchased five years ago in an EE width that are very comfortable. I was hoping the new boots would feel the same.
There is not much choice in a low cut boot with a Gortex Liner so unfortunately I will probably have to look for another brand.
I really wanted these boots to work and really like the Danner brand. But in the end, I had to send them back.

Pretty comfortable and not as bulky looking as expected

By Jimmy

from New York

Comments about Mountain Pass Black Glace:

Didn't take too long to break in, less than a week. It's now pretty comfortable and has good ankle support. They do feel lighter than my other hiking shoes.
I was a little apprehensive about the width, but it turns out to be great for winter socks, and my feet sit pretty snuggly. These are now my go to winter shoes for running around the city. Haven't done a big bushwalk in them yet, but so far so good.

Right on boot. Finally a hiking boot after all these years. Would prefer leather lined but this one will work.
