This is a really, really good boot. Just not perfect. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

First off, a note about fit. I disagree that these boots run narrow. I typically wear a 10.5 and my foot is on the wider side. 10D in this boot fits me great, maybe even a little wider than I need. (For reference, my foot measures 10.5" long and 4" wide at the widest point.) Plenty of room even with thick socks.

Good stuff: I love the overall look, I can wear these for work and going out. Leather is really quite thick, but break-in for me is mostly a non-issue. I was able to wear them all day for work the first day I got them. (Warehouse job, on my feet and walking a lot...) And then after work they are comfy enough that I just keep wearing them. I think people reporting a long painful break-in do not have the correct foot for this last. But hey, to each his own.

I can't give it a 5 because of the tongue design. I feel it needs to be a bit wider both where it is connected to the boot and above that point. It is difficult to get the tongue tucked in and if it slips over even a little bit it sort of pops out from inside the boot. Hoping this reduces as they break in, but I generally have to adjust the tongue a couple times per day. It seems to only happen on the right side which is weird.

As for the sole I like the style and it's comfy. I do wish I had a bit more snow/ice traction, so when I get these resoled I will probably go with a more traditional vibram lug sole. But it does keep my feet happy while standing all day.

Bought these boots in July 2014. I've had them just under a year and the rubber soles of the boot are completely worn. There is no tread left making them slippery in wet conditions. Very unimpressed with the quality of the Vibram sole.

Boots were worn 5 days a week for work. Mainly on concrete.

If you want a long lasting, solid boot... Don't buy these.

Pros

  • Soft Walking Sole
  • USA Made

Cons

  • Built On Narrow Last

Best Uses

  • Light Work Boot
  • Not Hot For Summer

I have had shoes and boots made for me because I have narrow feet. In most lasts I am a C width and some high end manufacture's boots I wear a B width. (witch is very narrow.)
The normal D width in the Danner Bull Run is so tight that there is no way I would consider purchasing it even knowing that the people at the Danner store here in Portland say that they will stretch out. The fact that I had to go with a EE, which is considered to be extra wide says that this boot is made on a very narrow last. I have never been fit into a wide shoes in my life.

Sole wears out quickly

I work a desk job and wear these boots about 3x a week. They took a while to break in- probably 2-3 weeks, but that was ok. The real disappointment is how quickly the sole wore out. It was within 2 months that I contacted customer service about it. My soles had become really slick, and the treads were all but gone, with stitching coming through. They didn't see it as a problem and recommended I buy new boots or re-sole these ones (for $115 or whatever it costs). Really disappointing considering I had been saving and convincing myself that these were a good buy.

The reality is that the Christy sole isn't meant for heavy use. I'm not sure what these were designed for, but in my mind, Danner spec'd the wrong Vibram sole for the job these are expected to do.

I purchased the Danner Bull Run boots because I was looking for a premium quality work boot that was made in the United States. I typically purchase cheaper alternatives to Danner boots and quickly wear them down (as expected). However, I have had my Bull Run boots for approximately six months and they have tolerated substantial daily wear in landscaping and farming.

The boots are also far more comfortable than I expected from such a durable shoe. The boots were true to size and the break-in period was roughly one week of use. There is ample support and yet ideal cushioning for long days on your feet. The Vibram Cristy outsoles do not provide substantial traction, but that is to be expected with a wedge-sole boot.

Lastly, the customer service at Danner was fantastic to deal with when I called with a question about my order. These boots are absolutely worth their price.

IBEW LU 26 32 years. Great almost give away pricing for a USA made boot. These boots are good for work, play or even nice enough for casual dress. Very light break in 12 hours for me. The only real issue is the top speed lace hooks are to high up on the boot " I just don't use the top one and they're great"
