Details

Ready for any mission, any environment, any time.

Developed side by side with the United States Marine Corps, the RAT (Rugged All Terrain) earned its name among elite warfighters as being the only proven USMC rugged all terrain boot available. Precisely crafted with a highly durable nubuck leather, a tear resistant 1000 Denier nylon, an abrasion-resistant polyurethane reinforced heel and toe cap and an advanced Vibram 360 Dri Ice outsole, the RAT embodies Danner's commitment to crafting higher standards. We recommend women select 1.5 to 2 full sizes down for correct fit.

Nubuck Leather & 1000 Denier Nylon Upper
For superior abrasion- and scuff-resistance, we use full grain nubuck leather combined with lightweight, breathable Denier nylon. This combination offers some of the best protection in cold and wet environments.
USMC Certified
Developed side by side with the United States Marine Corps, the RAT (Rugged All Terrain) earned its name among elite warfighters as being the only proven USMC rugged all terrain boot available.
Speed Lace System
Our special hardware allows you to tighten from toe to top with one swift tug for a secure, tight fit.
Electrical Hazard (EH) Protection
Meets or exceeds ASTM F2892-11 EH. Electrical hazard (EH) footwear is manufactured with non-conductive electrical shock resistant soles and heels.
Steel Toe (ST)
Meets or exceeds ASTM F2413-11M I/75 C/75 EH standards and ASTM F2413-11 F I/75 C/75 EH.
Vibram® 360 Dri Ice Outsole
An advanced lug design combined with Vibram's Dri-Ice compound keeps this outsole flexible and stable in extreme cold.
Extended Sizes
To accommodate more people, we've made this boot in extended sizes. We recommend women select 1.5 to 2 full sizes down for correct fit.
Stitchdown Construction
Handcrafted to provide a wider platform, our legendary stitchdown construction offers increased stability underfoot. Many of our stitchdown boots can be recrafted.
How It Fits
The 516S is designed specifically for models that include a safety toe. It offers a sleek, slender profile with a toe area that can accommodate the safety toe cap. Boots on this last tend to fit those with a more narrow foot better than those with a wider foot. This ensures a snug fit for terrain and activities that demand support and stability. If you do have a wider foot, we recommend ordering an "EE" (wide) in this style.
Recraftable
Extend the life of your boot with our recrafting services. This boot is eligible for a number of services, including part replacement, leather care and restitching. See our Recrafting page.

I got these boots as a pre-deployment issue through my Bn. I used Danner Boots as my Garrison pair, and was very excited to get a new pair for deployment. For the final months of my build-up, I wore the boots non-stop, to ensure that they would be perfect. I could not believe the quality of their construction, and the comfort that they provided me. In Afghanistan, my Bn was in Sangin, so we would have patrols where we would walk on land and tread through water. Weather on wet or dry land, these boots far exceeded my expectations, and made me a strong believer in the Danner product. They are so robust, and provided me with an amazing non-slip sole I could count on. Also, they are extremely comfortable. I will only use these Danner boots from now one (especially when I have to use a USMC approved boot)when it comes to operations, and can not wait to get some more. Also, they lasted throughout the deployment, and are still in use today; 2-years later.

Comments about USMC Rat 8" Mojave ST:

I was an 8404/0000 HM with the USMC Infantry for 6 years (Semper Fi Weapons 1/2!!!!). I exclusively wore Danners. I'm now a Remote Site Medic in Liberia, Africa at an open pit iron ore mine. I wanted to carry on the tradition of wearing Danners.

I have a few friends that are still in and they all, to a man, recommended these boots to me. Let me tell you, the price tag is WORTH it!

First, the boots fit perfectly out of the box. ZERO break in period. I spend 8 - 10 hours a day in these boots alternating between sitting at a desk and hiking the mine on 5 - 30 degree inclines. Nary a blister to be found, regardless of the socks I happen to be wearing.

My feet are never EVER uncomfortably hot or sweaty. Ever. Granted, I'm in Africa, not Afghanistan, but temps get up to 100 here and it is HUMID as hell. But my feet stay comfy.

I have read some complaints about the soles. While I'm not humping 40k a day in these, I am traversing some pretty steep inclines in all types of soil. From deep mud to loose sand. These soles have amazing traction and I have found that they do NOT collect mud in the grooves.

I do have one smallish complaint. The leather itself is water resistant (IDK abt waterproof...) but the vent holes in the instep eliminate this. Not too big a deal, but I do get a lot of rain here. The boots don't get soaking wet inside, and they dry relatively quickly.

All in all, I love these boots and will continue to stand by Danner. I'm buying a pair of the RAT Temperate Boots for back home in Colorado. Semper Fi, and thanks to all who continue to Stand The Watch.

Comments about USMC Rat 8" Mojave ST:

I order these boots to replace the standard Hot weather USMC boots that I have worn for over 5 years. You can't beat the quality of a Danner boot except when Danner themselves makes better one. These boots have almost no break in time and are ready to go out of the box.
I also have a pair of the RAT temperate boots and they are the same only better in cold weather and very wet terrain. These boots are becoming the standard issued boots for the United States Marine Corps and I can tell you first hand, they are the best boots I've worn in combat. You can not go wrong with a pair of Danners. One of the best piece of gear you need is on your feet and the RATs are the best boot for the job.

Comments about USMC Rat 8" Mojave ST:

The day these boots came in the mail I went for a four mile hike...no blisters. Beautiful. there was no break in time and they were very comfortable right out of the box. The insoles from Danner did seem to give up the ghost a little on the quick side but the boots were still good to go. I wear these to work as a general contractor in the northeast. So far they have seen every season and performed well. I'm glad I got the hot weather version,I just wear wool socks in the winter. They do tend to run a little big. I usually wear a 10.5 and i'm wearing a 9.5 and could maybe go to a 9. I did have one issue with the heel cup breaking and the leather tearing just above the sole at the heel. But when I called Danner they replaced the boots no questions asked. That is huge. An American company that stands behind their products!! They just earned another loyal customer! Thank you Danner!

Comments about USMC Rat 8" Mojave ST:

Mine came with laces. When used with Smart Wool socks my feet stay dryer than in tennis shoes with cotton socks. I haven't had athletes foot since I got these boot, but part of that could be the smart wool socks. I used to work in a norther state, but now I work in the middle of a desert. I needed a steel toe and hot weather boot, these work great.

My left heal almost blistered when I was breaking them in. Now my heel has a callous were the heel cup rubs on my left foot. The right heel in OK. I have been wearing boots for 30 years and have only have two pair that took longer to break in. Not nearly as comfortable as the timberline pro for standing and working 12 hours a day on concert, but my feet stay much dryer.
