The original Mountain Light, introduced back in 1979, is believed by many to be greatest backpacking boot of all time. Danner bootmakers build the new model to the exact same specs as the original, down to the color of the full-grain leather and the embossed Danner logo.
Ask a seasoned backpacker what the ideal hiking boot looks like, and youre bound to hear a description of the Mountain Light. Thats because for over 30 years, the Mountain Light set the standard for every new product that hit the market. And in all that time, nothing ever dethroned the original. Today, were proud to reintroduce this classic boot. Every single pair is built by hand in Portland, Oregon with full-grain leather, Vibram® Kletterlift outsoles, and waterproof GORE-TEX liners. The result is classic design that provides unmatched comfort and support.
Danner's 650 EE last offers a roomier fit for relaxed comfort while still offering rugged support and stability. This EE is not as wide as others so it offers the most universal fit for casual, everyday wear. We recommend sizing down a half size for the best fit.

I just ordered a pair of Combat Hikers and a pair of these. The CHs were easily worth a 4 star review, the best I'd ever give any boot, but when these came out of the box: GLORIOUS!!
I didn't know anyone still built a boot like this. They fit my 4E foot just as well as my XW CHs, but somehow they inexplicably feel even better! They look like something from a 70s mountaineering documentary and the traction is everything you expect from the Acadia, but with better ankle articulation and no loss of support.
This is the finest hiking boot I have ever seen and the only footwear I have ever given 5/5 stars. I pounded out some miles in them and while they need a bit of break in, unlike the CHs which needed none, they are extremely comfortable.
If you buy these and they fit you properly, you cannot fail to love them.
The only flaw is that they should include a pair of red suspenders and a big pewter beer stein as accessories. I may have to grow my beard back to wear them in town, just to uphold the imgage.

I have natural wide toes so i always look for wellfitting boots. When I looked at pictures of these on the web they looked well proportioned and the description mentioned that they were made on a wide last. When I got them the boots felt amazing all around except at the toe box. It was VERY narrow and almost looked disproportionally. after wearing them for 2 hrs my big toe joint was aching badly and i had to send them back.
This annoyed me since my Danner bull runs that have a "casual fit" last fits perfectly but these "wide" boots are extremly narrow.
The picture shows the difference between the toeboxes of the two danner boots. I wasted 160 dollars on toll fees and shipping to Denmark because of the bad description of the boot size
in short: if you have wide toes - DONT buy these, if you dont, then youll probably love them.

Simple but sophisticated, with age comes wisdom. Don't let the old ways go unoticed. Danner has done it for a long time. So I asked that you don't go a changin... and you answered.
I was nervous when I ordered my Danners. I knew they where good boots. But as boots go, they are only as good as they fit. With the perpetual uncertainty, even after measuring, I was anticipating a long return process. I ordered the size down as recommended, and crossed my fingers. I read all the reviews before I placed my order, and once I hit the button started wondering if the boots would not be snug enough. I have seemingly narrow width feet. Generally boots are made a bit wide for me and my feet shift to the sides making them very uncomfortable after a while.
Reading the reviews I noticed some naysayers mentioning this issue, so naturally I was worried after spending this amount of money on a boot. I plan on these boots being with me for a pretty long time. The boots arrived a day before they said they would, and the fit was spot on, (that in itself is a tall order). They have been broken in now (many a Hike carrying four kiddoes worth of stuff, and country wide vacation) and I can't imagine why I ever bought another kind of boot.
Another issue I noticed mentioned was something I thought was bogus, but wanted to debunk for myself; the eyelets causing stress points, they are boots, they are meant to be rugged, but the stress points should wear in after a time. Besides any seasoned hiker will tell you, you need to learn to lace your boots properly. On this point the boots are versatile, so when I need the support, I will lace them to the top, when I need them relaxed I will lace only the eyelets, they fit every need my feet require, laces tight or loose.
I was going to order a pair of laces when I placed the order for my boots. I forgot to order the laces and called so I wouldn't pay additional shipping. The representative was on the line quickly, and told me she would make sure the pair of laces I wanted would be sent out. I asked about cost and was told they would be no charge as a courtesy! Wow. This is how business should be done!
They look fantastic and just get better with age. Thank You Danner for a classic boot, done the good ol fashioned way.

I bought my first pair back in the early '80's. They were my primary hiking and backpacking boots. I used them as general work boots, and eventually my motorcycle riding boots. They were re-soled several times....and then stolen out of my truck in 2002. I was more upset over the loss of those boots than the damage to the truck. I bought another pair. If you can find better boots, buy them. I bet you can't.

Comments about Danner Mountain Light:
Not a good hiking boot. Lacing system creates pressure points. As boot is broken in it makes annoying squeaking sounds. Ankle support very difficult to break in and rubs excessively even with thick high socks. After spending so much on American made boots you keep hoping they will get more comfortable as you break them in, but they don't. Realize these are first and foremost a retro styled fashion boot and not for actual hiking / work use.
