I bought these to replace an older set of Vasquez's. I had a 7 day backpacking trip on "The Beaten Path", MT. This trip requires heavy rock and boulder path hiking, and this was the case.
These boots did admirably for from small streams to one slip while fording a river.
What impressed me was the fact I never felt like I needed to put on my campsite shoes after an all day hike across boulders. I just loosened the laces a bit. To save space and travel weight I wore the boots through the airports.
Our backpacking party compared boot wear from all the boulders, rocks (Granite primarily) and the Danner's won out. In fact the backpacking store in Red Lodge asked me about the Danner's (They do not carry Danner's currently) and were impressed with them.

Ordered a pair of the Rain Forest Heathman's as a smooth surface walking/Dog walking boot. My first pair of Danner's and was so impressed that I began researching a second pair to use hiking/hunting in South Texas. Although I would not be hiking shale slopes or grades, I have seen the bush down hear tear a pair of boots to shreds. Mostly use Chippewa snake boots but wanted something in a hiking boot pattern.
My research lead me to the Crater Rim's but to be sure I called Danner's excellent customer service to talk through my decision and place the order. This is where things went wrong. I specifically asked if the Crater Rim's had the same fit as the Heathman's and was told YES. I need the extra room in the toe box due to a Neuroma in between the second and third toe on my right foot. Order was placed directly with the customer service rep for a pair of 11.5 in the normal width.
Well the Crater Rim's DO NOT have the same fit as the Heathman's and are built on a different last. This information is available on the web site so it is on me to the extent that I did not read that and based my order solely on what the customer service rep told me.
I am able to use them but barely. I have to take out the foot bed on the right boot with different socks on each foot. Thankfully we do not experience extreme cold cause thicker socks would be out of the question. Otherwise they have been great in the bush. All I need are some snake proof gaiters come hunting season.
The other fail on my part was not to take advantage of Danner's wear indoors and return policy if the fit is not correct. I got impatient and used them straight away. Again, that is on me.
If you take care to fit these boots correctly, then you will never look back. Will see how they hold up this winter and if push come to shove, I will order a pair in "wide" to use as a cold boot with thicker socks.

I wore these boots in Afghanistan for a year. They were by far the best boots I have used in the Army in 16yrs. The sole is durable yet comfortable and they stood up to the terrain of Afghanistan. I was exposed to all types of elements and these boots took them all, never once did my feet get wet. I would recommend these boots to anyone without hesitation.
I have been hiking in these shoes for one year and I do believe they are indestructible. In the past I have wore out at least two pair of hiking boots in the same amount of time. I am a backcountry guide and SAR at the Grand Canyon and in the Sierra Nevadas and have nothing but good to say about these boots. My only downside is that I have a wide foot and found these too be a little narrow. To compensate for my feet and the boot construction I use silk sock liners and I put shoes trees in after my hikes.....no problem!
I think I can get at least two more years out of these boots and they only get more comfortable.
I also wore these for a year in Afghanistan. I walked a great many miles over any and all types of terrain and up and down mountains. Paired with thick wool socks I never got any blisters and miraculously my feet never got wet or cold.
With these boots on, my feet felt as if they were indestructible.
I also wore them in icy snowy slushy sub zero conditions and felt toasty warm (or at least not freezing... There are limits to any piece of gear).
Possibly the best cold weather boots I've ever worn.
The only thing I would improve would be to make the soles less stiff. Took a while to break in.
These boots are absolutely worth every penny. Built like a tank, yet very light and comfortable. There is not comparison to these boots so don't even bother looking. I would recommend these boots to anyone that works hard and plays hard. I've worn them to the range, while working, and outdoors. There is nothing negative that I can say about these boots.
I bought these because I had broken my Achilles tendon six months before a planned five week trip to Europe. My other ankle had been broken several years before and I knew I needed really good foot and ankle support. These exceeded my needs and expectations while walking through cities with uneven cobblestone roads or day hiking in the Alps. They looked good enough to wear anywhere.
I have other US made Danners for work around the farm and construction if I had been wearing them instead of tennis shoes I wouldn't have broken my Achilles. My orthopedic surgeon thought these would be great.
Great boots, look good, excellent fit and support.
