Legendary among hikers and backpackers worldwide

The USA-made Mountain Light hiking boot is legendary for its unmatched quality, durability and support. GORE-TEX lining provides waterproof protection. The Vibram Kletterlift outsole offers lightweight comfort as well as superb shock absorption and guarantees great traction and stability on both wet and dry surfaces. Danner’s famous stitchdown construction provides a wider platform for stability and the lace-to-toe system provides a secure fit.

Retro One Piece Leather Upper
Our one-piece leather design eliminates openings in the tongue area to help keep out debris and water. It also creates a simple finish with minimal seams.
GORE-TEX® (GTX)
100% waterproof and breathable, GORE-TEX® liners ensure that no water gets in, while allowing sweat and moisture to get out.
Danner Airthotic
This molded polyurethane instep cups the heel and supports the arch of the foot. Its half-length shape includes perforations to help air flow within your boots.
Vibram® Kletterlift Outsole
Specifically designed for comfort and durability; the heel provides superb shock absorption and the rubber compound guarantees great traction and stability on both wet and dry surfaces.
Women's Sizing
This boot is available in men's and women's sizing, please ensure that you've selected the correct width for your needs.
Stitchdown Construction
Handcrafted to provide a wider platform, our legendary stitchdown construction offers increased stability underfoot. Many of our stitchdown boots can be recrafted.
How It Fits
The 650 last offers a sleek, slender profile with a more narrow fit. Boots on this last tend to fit those with a more narrow foot better than those with a wider foot. This ensures a snug fit for terrain and activities that demand support and stability. If you do have a wider foot, we recommend ordering an "EE" (wide) in this style.
Recraftable
Extend the life of your boot with our recrafting services. This boot is eligible for a number of services, including part replacement, leather care and restitching. See our Recrafting page.

I bought my boots in 1996. I have worn them consistantly for the past 12 years... I wore them in the mountain trails in Korea, and they were excellent. Alittle heavy, but I have gotten to like the feel... You can re-sole them, as I ahve done so once... I love these boots, and I feel they will last me 25 years... Best money I have ever spent on footwear... I am happy to see Danner still makes these boots after all this time... I thought about getting a new pair, but why? My current pair are just fine... BUY THESE BOOTS!!!!!

First, I'd like to confirm everything Vigilante151 said to be true (at least for me). I have an E width foot and always wear a 39.5 when getting a boot and the sizing (6.5) and the EE width were perfect when wearing a light to medium weight crew smartwool sock. This boot also looks fantastic, but will never be seen on my feet thanks to poor tongue design.Just like Vigilante stated, the folds the tongue creates puts intense, uncomfortable pressure on the top of my foot when laced tight like I was going hiking. So uncomfortable in fact that I had to remove them while only walking around my house in the boots. This is due to the interesting design they implemented with the tongue which folds out quite a bit allowing a huge entry point into the boot. This design also causes the tongue to fall to the side virtually every time it is tied which creates yet another uncomfortable pressure point.See the pictures for tongue design. As if that wasn't enough, the lack of Achilles heel notch, which I was aware of thanks to other reviews, does in fact dig right in, rubs, and creates a hot spot. I have no idea how people wear these boots, but they are most definitely not for me which is a crying shame. I would think for a [$] American made boot that a little QA/QC might catch something like extra leather, but I guess not.I was planning on using these for hiking and snowshoeing. This is my first experience with Danner and it might be my last seeing as how this was one of their higher end boots and things did not go so well.

Comments about Mountain Light II 5" Brown:

I am a 58 yr old female. I have been hiking the Appalachian mountain areas for 40 years now. My first pair of Danner boots were Danner Lites in 1980 (still have them and use them for yard work). Second pair was Mountain Lights in 1993, I am still wearing them. Just ordered a pair of Mountain Light II, two weeks ago and these will be the last pair I will ever have to buy. I ONLY BUY THE MADE IN USA DANNERS. I hike often and in rough terrain, wet areas and rock. Danners are like a 4x4s for the feet. My 1993 pair still does not leak even tho the sole is loose...now THAT is a good boot! Heavy, yes but that is what you need for heavy packs and rough terrain. Squeaks a little when weather is very dry but who cares??? STILL by far the best boots for real backpacking. BOOTS are your biggest asset on long hikes. Have owned "pretty", "big name" boots in between the Danners and NONE held up! THANK YOU DANNER FOR NEVER CUTTING CORNERS ON YOUR MADE IN USA BOOTS!!!

Comments about Mountain Light II 5" Brown:

I have this boot or maybe it's predicessor from 1987. Been re-soled 4 times and squeek when I walk. These boots have been there and done that. They were stolen while I slept while in Greece in 1988 and I found them and retrieved them the next day. They have outlasted two wives and 3 continents.

Great Boot

Comments about Mountain Light II 5" Brown:

I'm very pleased with how these boots have turned out. I purchased them late last year, and have been breaking them in slowly over the winter for the upcoming hiking season.

Some say they are heavy. I don't think so. I love the old school look. The leather is great looking and supple. Love the craftsmanship. I will use these as a trail boot, and keep them out of the ugly terrain - that's for my other cheaper boots.

      A couple of observations:

      1. You have to break in leather boots, including these. These boots initially "bit" the back of my ankles/legs when new. This happens because the boot is new and does not flex on the top of the foot, lifting the heel. After the boot was broken in, my heel did not lift and the ankles were fine.

      2. Purchase the Danner boot dressing. It helps condition and break in the leather.

      3. The mention of "folds" under the boot tongue: when the boot is broken in, these flatten out and get softer, a non-issue.

      4. I put in a pair of aftermarket insoles. They fit fine and feel great. Not an issue. No reason you can't do this. I do this with every pair of boots I buy.

Comments about Mountain Light II 5" Brown:

I bought these to wear for working outdoors (hiking to worksites, bushwhacking, etc), but I never made it past the front door with these boots on. The worst thing about the boot is the lack of an Achilles notch, which causes it to bite into the Achilles tendon. Also, like other Danners, it wont fit as well if you (or your feet) aren't fat. The boots look nice I guess, but that isn't enough to keep me from sending them back. For now I'll have to stick with my ugly old Super Rain Forests until I can find something I like better.
